Make Your Own Soy Candle

The Mason Jar Candle

Easy instructions for a soy mason jar candle!

These mason jar candles will become a staple in your household!  They also make great gifts.  With a few steps you can have quality candles that you and your family will love.  I am going to provide steps for an 8 oz mason jar candle but this can be scaled to any size that you like.
  1. The amount of wax you want to use should be weighed out.  For one 8 oz candle we are going to use 6 oz of wax.  I suggest using soy wax flakes but I will cover materials in another post.
  2. You now need to make a double boiler to safely melt your wax.  This can be done by putting water in a sauce pan and placing your pouring pot into the water.  You will need to bring your wax to a temperature of 170 degrees.  A candy thermometer works well for gauging the temperature of your wax.  Be sure to check the the wax occasionally to make sure that it does not reach an excessive temperature.
  3. While the wax is heating we can now prepare our jars.  Use a hot glue gun and place a dab of glue on the bottom of your wick.  Your wick will now need to be centered into your mason jar.  I used a cut straw over the wick to guide it into position.  I've found using two pens or a clothespin works great for centering and holding your wick while your wax is poured into the candle.
  4. Measure your fragrance oil into a pourable measuring cup.  I use .5 oz of oil for one candle but you will find that some wax types can hold more.
  5. Once the wax has reached temperature remove it from heat and pour in your fragrance.  You will want to stir regularly to ensure that the fragrance is well mixed.
  6. If it is your preference you can now add dye droplets to your wax until you reach the desired color.
  7. Once your wax has reached a temperature of 120-130 degrees you can now pour your wax into your containers.
  8. Congratulations you have just made yourself a candle.  Give your candle a full 24 hours before you try to burn it.
